At the time of its discovery, the saola was the first large mammal new to science since the 1940s. Habitat and Range The saola is only known from the slopes of the Annamite Mountains, a restricted mountainous jungle on the northwest-southeast border between Vietnam and the Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (Laos). The region is a subtropical/tropical moist environment which is characterized by evergreen or mixed evergreen and deciduous woodlands, and the species seems to prefer edge zones of the forests. Saola are presumed to reside in mountain forests during the wet seasons and move down to the lowlands in winter. The species is presumed to have been formerly distributed in wet forests at low elevations, but these areas are now densely populated, degraded, and fragmented. Low population numbers make distribution particularly patchy. The saola has rarely been seen alive since its discovery and is already considered critically endangered. Scientists have categorically documented saola in the wild on only four occasions to date. Diet and Behavior Local villagers have reported that the saola browses on leafy plants, fig leaves, and stems along rivers and animal trails; the calf captured in 1994 ate Homalomena aromatica, an herb with heart-shaped leaves. The bovine appears to be mainly solitary, although it has been seen in groups of two to three and rarely in groups of six or seven. It is possible that they are territorial, marking their territory from their pre-maxillary gland; alternatively, they may have a relatively large home range that allows them to move between areas in response to seasonal changes. Most of the saola killed by the locals have been found in the winter when they are in lowland habitats near to the villages. Reproduction and Offspring In Laos, births are said to occur at the beginning of the rains, between April and June. Gestation is estimated to last about eight months, the births may be single, and lifespan is estimated at 5–10 years. Little else is known about the offspring of this critically endangered species. Threats The saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Formal surveys have yet to be taken to determine accurate population numbers, but the IUCN estimates the total population to be between 70 and 750 and declining. About 100 animals reside in protected areas. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has prioritized the saolas survival, saying, Its rarity, distinctiveness, and vulnerability make it one of the greatest priorities for conservation in the Indochina region. Conservation Status IN 2006, the IUCN Species Survival Commissions Asian Wild Cattle Specialist Group created the Saola Working Group to protect the saola and their habitat. WWF has been involved with the protection of the saola since its discovery, focused on strengthening and establishing protected areas as well as research, community-based forest management, and strengthening law enforcement. Management of Vu Quang Nature Reserve where the saola was discovered has improved in recent years. Two new adjacent saola reserves have been established in Thua-Thien Hue and Quang Nam provinces. The WWF has been involved in the setting up and management of protected areas and continues to work on projects in the region. Only recently discovered, saola are already extremely threatened, says Dr. Barney Long, WWF Asian species expert. At a time when species extinction on the planet has accelerated, we can work together to snatch this one back from the edge of extinction. Saolas and Humans The main threats to the saola are hunting and fragmentation of its range through habitat loss. Local villagers report that saola are often caught accidentally in snares set in the forest for wild boar, sambar, or muntjac deer- the snares are set for subsistence use and crop protection. In general, increases in the numbers of lowland people hunting to supply the illegal trade in wildlife has led to a massive increase in hunting, driven by traditional medicine demand in China and restaurant and food markets in Vietnam and Laos; but as a newly discovered animal, it is not currently a specific target for either the medicinal or food market as of yet. If this measure were to pass, state law would be changed, so that certain non-violent adult offenders who use or possess illegal drugs would receive drug treatment and supervision in the community, not prison. Right now California is ranked number one in the nation for its rate of imprisonment for drug offenders. If Proposition 36 passes, California could become number one for its treatment for drug offenders. The measure also provides state funds to counties to operate the drug treatment programs. Additionally, studies have shown that drug treatment is a far more effective than prison in reducing future criminal activity. Robert Roseman, a 51-year-old heroin addict from Sacramento says, â€Å"I was always able to get drugs in prison†¦all you’re going to learn in prison is to do crime better.† Stephen V. Manley, President of Drug Court Professionals says that, â€Å"Proposition 36 doesn’t provide â€Å"court-supervised† drug treatment. It ties the hands of judges, hurts legitimate treatment and effectively decriminalizes heroin, methamphetamine and other illegal drugs. Drug courts hold drug abusers accountable with regular drug testing and consequences for failing treatment— accountability not found in Proposition 36.† Drug testing is a part of court-supervised drug treatment everywhere in California today, and it will continue to be under Proposition 36. There are no legal barriers to drug testing. Judges can and will order appropriate levels of testing of offenders placed in treatment under the initiative's system; Proposition 36 simply does not tie judges' hands by prescribing a one-size-fits-all regimen for all offenders. The short story, Hands, which was written by Sherwood Anderson, basically revolves around Wing Biddlebaum, who is the main character of the story, and his struggles to cure his seemingly â€Å"uncontrollable hands. † In the story, Wing is portrayed as a middle-aged and nearly bald man who lives alone in his home. His only friend is George Willard, a young reporter for local paper, whom he values a lot. Other than Wing’s ordeal with his â€Å"disease,† the story also highlights his friendship with George. Basically, Wing first discovered his â€Å"disease† when he was still a teacher in Pennsylvania. As a teacher, Wing was very close to his students and often touched their hair and shoulders as a form of affection. However, one of the students, a boy, misinterpreted his actions as sexual in nature, causing his parents to confront him and throw him out of town. This experience basically caused Wing to live in isolation as he believed he was sick and he needed to avoid close contact with people to be cured. However, Wing’s â€Å"uncontrollable hands† again continued to haunt him despite his isolation him and almost jeopardized his friendship with George. In another flashback, while Wing is giving advice to George, he suddenly finds himself caressing the boy’s shoulders with his hands the just like the way he touched his students shoulders. Although George doesn’t notice what he was doing to him, Wing was bewildered upon realizing what his hands were doing to the boy and so he quickly placed them into his pockets. It was here that he realized that he was not yet cured of his â€Å"disease. † Generally, although the story did not specifically say that Wing has a â€Å"disease,† almost every event concerning his hands showed that he had one. However, it would be more accurate to say that his â€Å"uncontrollable hands† were psychological in nature. Basically, when Wing uses his hands to do things such as picking strawberries at an extraordinary speed and caressing the shoulder’s of his students, he does so almost subconsciously, which further supports the fact that he had a mental problem.

From the Simile and the word choice this makes the poem more interesting as we have a feel for the beggar situation and that he is being treated very badly and not like a human beginning In the second stanza the poet talks about the beggar appearance. : â€Å"Arms and legs could be cracks in the stone† This metaphor creates the image that the beggar is very thin and broken as the crack in stone suggest that he is very small and can fit in it and that the stone has been broken and the stone is a symbol of the beggar. The beggar has been homeless for a long time as it’s the, â€Å"ants journeys, the flies’ descents†. The beggar is use by and flies this suggests that the beggar hasten moved in a long time and give the sense of him being dead or dirty as insects like dead or dirty things. This give the poem a sad idea of the beggar that will keep the reader interested as he wants know if the beggar get treated better by society. The poet uses a metaphor to explain and give the visual image of the beggar as, â€Å"he lies veined into the street, a fossil man†. This technique makes the reader sympatric for the beggar, as they know that the man (beggar) has become dehumanized. The idea vein in to stone shows that the beggar has been reduce to stone and that the once lived as he is know a fossil reminding us that there was a life there once. The poet has used enjambment in the third stanza. : â€Å" Behind him there is a crowd †¦ an old man asleep on the pavement†. The long sentence shows that crowd passing him like there is nothing there and the since there is no full stops this show that there is no one stopping at the beggar. The poet has made the poem more interesting for the reader as he giving the since that the beggar is visible and that know cares for him as they don’t want t help him. In the forth stanza first the reader thought the photo was a goof idea but after revisiting the photo he know understands what he did wrong. â€Å"I thought it them a good composition†. The poet think more about his personal benefit from the beggars suffering and not about exploiting money and satisfaction from someone’s suffers and misfortune. The poet shows his feelings towards what he thinks about the beggar with his word choice you can see how bad he feels. : â€Å"Glibly†. As it shows that the poet regrets his comment on the photo as he know become aware of the crowd not paying him any attention to his suffering and that he want to make art from someone’s suffering and hunger. In the last stanza the poet talks about the emotion he felt as he felt guilty about thinking picture of the beggar. : â€Å"Weeping into a pillow chides me now for my presumption†. The poet is distraught over the photo and the word, â€Å"Glibly† has connotations of reprimand this how that the poet was expressing his disapproval of taking the photo. The heart symbolizes guilt and self-conscious in which is strong enough to make the narrator give in and confess that he committed the murder. Although the heart does not physically speak, it has â€Å"spoken† aloud, as if mentioning what the narrator performed, even though the narrator confessed for himself. Symbols are used in order to represent greater abstract meanings and imagery within a work of literature. By using symbols, an author can continue to describe what is occurring in the story without disrupting the flow of his or her work by â€Å"pausing† to explain the actual concept he or she is trying to depict.
